Foreign Grocery Friday: Drink a Refreshing 'Boing!' in Mexico

When we travel, one of our favorite things to do is to pop into a local grocery store and check out the food products and candies we'd never find anywhere else. So we're trying out this new feature, Foreign Grocery Friday, where each week we'll feature some of our (and your) favorite overseas treats. Got a recommendation? Let us know!

There's one sure way to avoid Monteczuma's Revenge, and that is not to drink the water and stick with prepackaged foods if you can. Down in Mexico, our choice is to go with the most brightly colored local sodas and juices we can grab out of the freezer case in the taqueria. And the one with the peppiest name typically rules over all, and that's got to be Boing! Bebida de Fruta. It's a solid alternative to the more ubiquitous Jarritos soda and it's got a few flavors to boot.

Wikipedia says that the company is a worker-run cooperative with a headquarters in Mexico City. The more you know...

The taste: We always go for the naranja/orange flavor because there is something so refreshing about it after digging into a spicy lunch. Boing! is at first quite deceiving in its appearance. It looks like typical orange pop, but a taste reveals that its far more thirst-quenching and less fizzy than say, a Fanta. Plus it's a great sign that Boing!'s second ingredient after water is straight up orange juice.

The price: 12 Mexican Pesos, which is a little under $1.

Where to find them: Just as we said before, Boing! is best consumed in whatever corner taqueria you walk into for a bite to eat. Choosing it over Jarritos or a Coke may even make you seem more in-the-know, but that's just our friendly assumption.
