Is This Samsonite Luggage Ad Really the Dumbest Ad Ever?

Copyranter calls this possibly the dumbest ad he's ever seen, a sentiment echoed by the hive mind at Ads of the World. The average ranking over there, representing the collective wisdom of a few dozen folks, stands at an impressive 3.4/10. And in all fairness, the design does seem to lack something in the way of sophisticated visuals; and decent photoshopping; and making sense. But dumbest ever still seems a little harsh to our untrained eyes.

Frankly we're not even sure that the ad, for Samsonite's ultra-lightweight Cosmolite luggage, is the dumbest baggage-related ad we've seen in the last few months. If you expand the time line to last year, the competition starts to get very fierce indeed. What we're saying is that there are a lot of cringe-inducing stupid ads in the travel world. We're talking to you, Australia tourism board.

What do you think? The ad is supposed to convey the idea that Cosmolite luggage is lightweight—"the strongest and lightest Samonsite ever" in fact—and it does seem to get the point across. On the other hand the artwork genuinely does look like something we'd slap together to make fun of a poorly photoshopped ad (though we'd probably use more neon). So maybe these are ad designers and they simply find crappy design offensive.

Personally we're more offended by the $500 price tag on the actual luggage. We don't pack things worth $500 inside checked baggage, so it seems a little exorbitant to have the luggage itself worth that much.
