All of this is blamed on the greediness of states, who look to reclaim budget losses by reaching deep down into the pockets of tourists and visitors, and especially those who shack up at a hotel. We all know, but do not love, hotel occupancy taxes, and although some 22 states are working to slowly jack up the "taxes & fees" portion of your room bill, Florida is going further by charging a tax on vacation rentals and timeshares. Forbes estimates that this new tax will bring in over $2.2 million in the first two years.
Add this to the list of other travel fees that continue on an upward trend: namely checked baggage fees on airlines. Forbes also notes extra campsite taxes and the raising of hunting/fishing license costs.
And so now we'll hit you with another old saying to sum up all this news: "everything goes up in price, but my paycheck stays the same." Budget traveling may just win over more cash-conscious globetrotters this year than before.
