Despite being home to the famed Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs isn't the only racetrack around. The Del Mar Racetrack does it up SoCal style, with a picturesque spot along the coast of Del Mar and fitting activities like a Miss Cougar contest. But that's not to say this track doesn't have serious race roots; Seabiscuit ran here in 1938.

Del Mark kicks off its 71st season on July 21. More than 40,000 are expected to attend opening-day festivities with thoroughbreds racing, an over-the-top crazy hat competition and, of course, to see and be seen.

The racetrack's seven-week season runs through September 8. Racing happens Wednesday through Sunday, with post time for the first race on most days at 2 p.m. On Wednesdays, you can score free entry into the grandstands, a reserved seat and half-price concessions (the offer's not valid on opening day).

Even if horses aren't your thing, this season has a slew of other offerings. As part of its concert series, the track will offer free musical performances featuring the B-52s (Aug. 21) and Weezer (Aug. 21). Moms, lock up your sons on July 30, when Miss Cougar will be crowned. A Craft Microbrew Festival and Local Music Showcase will take over August 28. And on Labor Day, the racing horses will be replaced by wiener dogs at the Wiener Dog National San Diego Finals.

Entry into the racetrack starts at $6. Del Mar isn't hard to get to, since Amtrak stops in nearby Solana Beach and free shuttles will bring you from the station to the track.
