Oops! Too late! If you had "passport renewal" or "get extra passport pages" on your to-do list, then you've waited too long to catch the cheaper rates for these services, as passport and visa price hikes go into effect tomorrow.

These changes come as the US Government looks for ways to deepen its coffers as passport fees subsidize the State Department's work overseas, including emergency relief for American abroad. Today was the last day to get a new passport for $100, as they'll now be $135, inclusive of a $25 administrative fee.

The full rundown of passport price hikes:

· Passport

· Passports for children under 16
Old: $85 New: $105, inclusive of $25 administrative fee

The $25 acceptance fee is not new

What you are calling an administrative fee is actually the acceptance fee; it is kept by the place where you go to file the passport application (post office, courthouse, etc.) as compensation for their services. This fee was $25 before the fee hike and remains $25 after the fee hike, and applies equally to passport and passport card applications. The only way to avoid paying this fee is if you renew your passport/passport card by mail (which you can do as long as the passport/passport card was issued in the past 15 years and was issued after you turned 16); first time applicants MUST appear in person and therefore must pay the acceptance fee.

correct

The Consular fees information wasn't clear about inclusion of $25 fees for the old rate, but the asterisks on the linked page clear this up. $25 is included in the rates above.
