Travel clothing does not have to be ugly. It does not have to be all khaki cargo pants or wrinkle-free shapeless black dresses and it does not have to be from some sort of outfitter catalog. In fact, having a travel-friendly wardrobe is far easier than you'd think and the answer is right in front of your face if you've done any traveling in Asia or if you live in New York: it's Uniqlo.

Uniqlo is a Japanese mega-brand, as big over there as H&M is in the US and Europe, and it's also our secret fashion weapon. It should be your first stop for travel looks, if you can hit up one of their many, many Asian locations or their single US shop in Soho (with another soon to come on 5th Avenue). Prices are very affordable ($8 up to $100 unless we're talking leather), the clothing is modern but not overtly trendy, almost everything has easy care instructions and the fit is excellent.

Perhaps one of the biggest bonuses travelers will find here is their line of HeatTech Innerwear clothing, which uses Japanese garment technology to trap your body heat and keep you warm in the coldest temperatures. It's an essential base layer for $20, hello Antarctica! But still, we've scored French linen wrap dresses for $20 on sale, two excellent coats, countless leggings and tights, some of their popular denim and even underwear here, most of which regularly makes it into our luggage for every trip.

Special designer collaborations like with Jil Sander and Costello Tagliapietra keep us coming for dressier items too, and guys will do well to check out the entire menswear floor. No, Uniqlo didn't ask us to write this or anything; we just can't recommend them high enough. It's only too bad they don't sell shoes, but great travel shoes are another issue altogether.
