Passport and Visa Fee Hikes Hit July 13

June 30, 2010 at 5:05 PM | by | Comment (1)

Time to send your passport to get those extra pages added in ASAP. Passport fees are going up, and they're doing it soon, on July 13 to be exact.

These changes come as the US Government looks for ways to deepen its coffers as passport fees subsidize the State Department's work overseas, including emergency relief for American abroad. Sure, it's for a good cause, but these higher passport prices mean for a family of four to get passports, it'd cost $640, and that's a little more than many have stashed in the cookie jar for a rainy day.

The full rundown of passport price hikes:

· Passport
Old: $100 New: $135 + $25 administrative fee
· Passports for children under 16
Old: $85 New: $105 + $25 administrative fee
· Passport renewal

Correction & More Detail on Passport Fees

The new adult fee is $110 + $25 acceptance fee if for a new passport, not $135 plus $25 as posted above. Minor/child is $80 plus $25. If renewing and have old passport, you will not need to go to an acceptance agent and pay the fee. Rather you can mail it directly or send to a private expeditor company to submit application and obtain passport. Other fee increases are as follows. The adult passport card increases from $20 to $30, and the passport card for a child increases from $10 to $15 on July 13th. Using an acceptance agent will cost another $25. It should also be noted that the $25 administrative/acceptance fee collected by official passport acceptance agents at post offices and city governments may increase within the year. The Department of State said they would review in the coming year the costs associated with this fee as over 100 different acceptance organizations stated fee is too low. Finally, requesting the Passport Agency to add extra pages to a valid 28-page passport book will cost $82 starting July 13th. Prior to this new rule, it is free so you still have time to add pages to your valid passport book if you anticipate traveling quite a bit in the coming years. Frequent travelers when renewing or getting a new passport can ask for the larger book, 52 pages, at no extra cost. Extra pages are needed by frequent travelers going to countries that require a visa.
