The VinniBag: A Case for Overprotective Wine Lovers

June 30, 2010 at 4:09 PM | by Omri | 1 Comment

Everyone is familiar with those giant Greek vases that were used for centuries to move olive oil and wine around to the ports of the Mediterranean Sea. We used to think that was a pretty good packaging solution—or at least as good as our preferred method of putting the bottle in the trunk for the duration of the car ride, but apparently we were wrong. It turns out that "traveling with wine, olive oil or just regular toiletries can be awkward at best, disastrous at worst." The reason we know that is because the makers of the VinniBag told us so.

The VinniBag is an empty bag, inside of which you place a bottle of liquids. Once the bottle has been so placed, the bag is sealed and inflated, thus creating a cushion of air around said bottle. The practical upshot of which is that the bottle is protected from the environment and the environment is protected from the bottle contents. Modern wine transportation technology for the modern age.

Yeah, listen. It's not that we can't see how this product could be used. We can even envision some kind of wine-soaked Sideways-style road trip where the VinniBag would be a little bit useful, since uncorking and recorking might lead to spillage. This isn't one of those travel gear posts where we're just insulted that someone would market the product. But do we really need additional containers for our containers at $28 per bag? It just seems a little unnecessary.

As for the Vinnibag's other described use, where suggest using it as an inflatable travel pillow - please don't do that.

Payment on the main Vinnibag page is through Paypal so the transaction is secure. But if you're feeling sketched out by the site there's a seller offering the product on Amazon for the same $28 price. There are also any number of retail dealers with brick and mortar stores that you can hit up. Or ditch the whole idea and buy yourself a full case of Two-Buck Chuck.

    Brilliant!

This is absolutely brilliant! Everytime I purchase wine abroad or in another location, I always pack and think that shoving it in between piles of clothes will work... I am always let down!
