Forget Corn Dogs! The Wizarding World Sells Cauldron Cakes and Sugar Quills

If there's one thing you'll learn from a visit to Universal Studios' Wizarding World of Harry Potter, it's that if all the fanciful food they serve was actually part of the regular diet of Harry Potter and friends, that they'd have lost their teeth long ago.

As you might be able to imagine of a place that looks like Halloween settled down for the long haul, the majority of the specialty food items at The Wizarding World are sugar monsters. To counteract this, head into the Three Broomsticks for traditional British fish & chips and Scotch pies. Or there's always the Hog's Head pub, with it's own unique brew.

We did manage to put our camera down to try a few goodies ourselves, and so how did we like them? Well...

· Cauldron cakes are our personal favorite, because we are mildly chocoholic and they are like halloween-y cupcakes. Made of a soft chocolate muffin filled with chocolate mousse and topped off with a shaped chocolate handle and a sugar smoke plume, they are not short on sweetness or calories.
Verdict: We finished one, but couldn't imagine going back for a second it was that rich.

· Treacle pudding is a warm, buttery steamed sponge cake served with a golden syrup. It's actually noted in the books as being Harry's favorite dessert, and we noticed that it was pretty popular at Honeydukes, perhaps for this reason.
Verdict: We finished one and quickly returned for another. Stopped short of a third, however.

· Treacle fudge is the Wizarding World's own concoction, to compliment their small selection of other more regular fudge flavors. There's so much butter in it that, mixed with the fudge, it becomes the worst kind of tooth-hurting treat.
Verdict: Could not finish even half of a small piece. Do not do.

· Butterbeer, the drink of choice among wizards, has been recreated for The Wizarding World. Most describe it as a mix between butterscotch and shortbread cookies and they are very correct, but add an unexpected foamyness. The first few sips of a slushy one are really quite awesome, but then you might look at it later—say, three sips in—and ask yourself why the crap you are still drinking it.
Verdict: Get the smallest size just to try it and say you've had it, but don't hinge your day on loving it so much that you'll chugalug on it to beat the heat.

· Pumpkin Juice is super cute with its little plastic pumpkin cap-topper, and it's certainly appealing on a hot day. We first tried it icy cold and hated hated hated it. The taste reminded us of an overly spiced pumpkin pie; once it hits your tongue, there's the delicious pumpkin flavor for a millisecond, but the less appealing spice then hits and lingers. Retried at room temperature, we actually drank 2/3 of a bottle before calling it quits.
Verdict: Like Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice is a try-it-for-the-novelty beverage, and sadly it's not nearly as refreshing as the Black Tea-Lemonade mix they sell next to it.

Disclosure: We're at The Wizarding World as a guest of Universal Studios, but all views expressed here are completely our own.
