As of right now, all flights will stay put through almost the end of this week. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to just get rebooked on another competing airline, but Spirit is shelling out some cash and airfare credit to stranded passengers. They’re providing future flight credits for the total amount of your ticket along with $100 for the inconvenience. They’ll even give you a full refund, but you’ll have to give them a call at (800) 772-7117 and we’d expect a pretty decent hold time.
Initially officials thought that some managers and pilots would cross the picket lines to fly a few flights, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. We don’t want to get into all the workings of the labor dispute, but the pilots want more cash and the airline isn’t paying up. Spirit says that it offered the pilots double-digit percentage increases, as well as $3,000 signing bonuses. Spirit's pilots are among the lowest paid of US airline pilots, so Spirit better pony up soon or else we can envision more such strikes in the future.
Hopefully everyone can agree on some increased cash, less hours, and more obnoxious advertising campaigns before too long. We’re just dying to get back in the air so we can pay for our carry-on bag. Right.
