Jetstar Will Begin Using iPads as In-Flight Entertainment This Month

The Apple iPad—so new and yet already so embraced by the travel industry. The TSA doesn't ask you to take it out of your bag for screening, we've seen travelers using them at every airport we've been to since iPads were released for sale, and now the airlines themselves are looking to offer them as in-flight entertainment.

We've already reported on a company called Bluebox Avionics, which markets iPads to airlines as IFE, will have a carrier already rolling out with the iPads in July. And that airline is Qantas' low-cost spin-off Jetstar, who will begin testing the gadgets on select routes later this month.

Runway Girl discovers that the iPad will cost $10 to rent while in flight, and it will be stocked with games from the iTunes App Store, magazines for the iPad, eBooks from the App store, hundreds of thousands of your favorite third-party apps (play Flight Control while flying!), and custom apps from the airline.

That's all the news we have for now; the update on iPads as IFE failed to address our original concerns, like will these iPad-equipped flights will also have in-flight WiFi? How will flight crew make sure that passengers aren't slipping a couple iPads into their carry-ons while deplaning? And will the flight crew be trained on how to operate these special iPads, for instructing the less than tech savvy who purchase use of an iPad on the flight?

JetStar iPad IFE...Why?

Novelty, another gadget in the cabin. If your unfamiliar with iPad, it will be a 10.00 In-Flight Training session...money pit for passenger. One more Announcement for the FlightAttendents...instructions! If you own an iPad and skilled with the device, you'll already have it with you on the plane...no rental here for JetStar. No real breakthrough in this announcement, just another business model with no real economic value. What happen to a deck of cards with the Airline Brand on the packaging...that goes the distance for Marketing and Branding.
