Each gallery focuses on a feminine archetype with period clothing brought to life with hand-painted panoramas animated by music, video and lighting. The 1890s-inspired "Heiress" gallery evokes a ballroom with gowns by Charles Frederick Worth. The "Gibson Girl" gallery offers outdoorsy scenes to show the athleticism and physical independence of ladies from the era with bathing costumes, riding ensembles and cycling suits. Tight bias-cut gowns, including a dress designed by Travis Banton for Anna May Wong in the film Limehouse Blues, are on display in the "Screen Siren" gallery, which is made to look like a 1930s cinema.
The exhibition showcases 80 pieces of haute couture from designers such as Travis Banton, Gabrielle Chanel, Callot Soeurs, Jeanne Lanvin, Valentino, Madeleine Vionnet, Weeks, Charles Frederick Worth, and Jean-Philippe Worth, among others.
"American Woman" runs through August 15. Tickets to the museum cost $20, and the SJP-narrated audio tour is an additional $7.
