A video example of what to expect at DUS during the Parkour championship

Have you heard of Parkour? This crazy "sport" is best described as a mixture of Monty Python's "Ministry of Silly Walks" sketch and breakdancing; in essence, it's extreme walking. Actually, the American version of The Office devoted an entire episode to Parkour—go Hulu it.

Parkour actually has a huge following and many talented athletes, even if it's a sport where you find yourself wanting to yell "you'd have to crazy to do that" at them. The focus is on body control and creativity as Parkour athletes find the most efficient way through the city environment. Or, in this case, the airport's environment. Germany's Parkour championship will be held at Düsseldorf International Airport on June 6, and the public is welcome to come and watch the masters for free, without an outgoing flight.

Two obstacle courses for speed and style challenges will be set up in the airport's large terminal, and newcomers will have a chance to attempt the sport under close instruction. It'll be too late to enter yourself in the contest if you prove good at it, but there's always next year! The winner of this Germany championship gets tickets to attend the North American event.

Have no interest in trying out Parkour, but still want an excuse to hang out at an architecturally stunning airport? DUS will also be giving public tours on June 6, including trips onto the tarmac and to the viewing platforms. Yes, the airport is open for usual flight traffic during all of this.

We were just at Düsseldorf Airport a few days ago actually, catching a Lufthansa direct flight to Newark. Too bad we didn't hear about the Parkour championship sooner, or we would have camped out in Germany a week longer. Check out our pictures of the spacious airport above.

Disclosure: Lufthansa flew us to Germany, but all opinions and observations here are our own.
