Japan Airlines has had a pretty tough 2010, and it appears that things aren’t getting better anytime soon. The airline had to file for bankruptcy back in January, and then there was the whole off again on again saga about which airline alliance to choose—they stuck with oneworld in the end. Now we find out that the airline is letting loose almost one third of their workforce.

In total they are cutting about 16,500 jobs from all areas of their business. Roughly 5,000 cargo workers will be forced to look elsewhere for employment, and there are around 2,000 sales representatives that will need to update their resumes. The airplanes will be a little lighter too, as 775 pilots and 2,460 flight attendants will be let go.

The airline is also looking for nearly 3,000 volunteers willing to take an early retirement. Originally these cuts were supposed to take place over time, but JAL has been loosing loads of cash each day and had to act quickly.

We wish the newly unemployed workers the best of luck, but if they need some extra cash there’s always the option to sell their uniforms on eBay. Apparently they are in pretty high demand in a slightly different industry.

increase in unemployment

They will cut roughly 16.5k jobs for this year? That's pretty disappointing to all the employees I'm sure. Hopefully, affected employees will get another jobs immediately.Stewart B
