Whole Foods Hosts a Film Festival to Educate About What Else But Food

Apparently Earth Day has infiltrated the entire month of April, and that’s fine with us as long as we can learn about Mother Nature through movies. We like planting trees and recycling, but it’s been kind of hot lately and air conditioning is pretty nice. Whole Foods Market appeals to our lazy side with the Let’s Retake Our Plates film festival. The only down side is that we’ll probably feel guilty eating those Sabor De Soledad cheese puffs in the theatre.

Whole Foods wants everyone to know about their food and how it got to the plate, and they’re teaching their message with affordable film screenings around the country throughout April. Some of the films are somewhat well known like King Corn. We’ve seen this one and recommend its story of how two people trace the origin of several different types of corn products; they learn that it’s in pretty much everything they eat and they have a hard time giving up the cob. If all the new movies are a little too cutting edge for your taste, there will also be screenings of classics like Soylent Green and Silent Running. We’re pretty confident that Whole Foods sells nothing made from people so don’t worry.

There’s many free screenings, but the ones that cost some cash will only set you back about $5 or so. It’s cheap entertainment and a decent way to learn about problems like over fishing—that’s what the movie End of the Line tries to teach. For those urban farmers out there, The Garden tells the story of how farmers fought back against a team of bulldozers ready to eliminate their garden in Los Angeles.

You can get the full rundown of what’s being offered in your area right here, but those in California and Texas—home of Whole Foods—will have the most movie options. We’re kind of jealous of all their options, even if we have to limit our snacks to organic soy popcorn.
