Bike Rentals Arrive at the Grand Canyon Just in Time for Summer

Bicycles have been allowed within Grand Canyon National Park for years, but the policy was always BYOBike. Now the National Park Service has given approval for someone to set up shop right in the park at the South Rim, and visitors are welcome to ditch their four-wheeled vehicles in favor of two-wheeled ones.

Bright Angel Bicycles has gotten the official go ahead to start offering bike rentals within the national park. Visitors can pick up their bikes at the beginning of May at the Canyon Visitor Information Plaza, and pedal-power will be available from 8am to 6pm into the fall. Apparently there’s not much interest in a winter bicycle tour of the canyon.

Right now things will continue forward for a year, but there’s the possibility that the bikes will remain for years to come. It seems like a lock that this will be pretty successful, and as long as lawyers aren’t worried about people riding off the trails and into the gorge this should stick around for quite a bit of time.

Full day rentals will set you back $40, and helmets and safety vests are included in the rate. If you just want to go for a brief trip bikes are also available by the hour for just $10, and there are plenty of different sizes for men, women, and children. Bright Angel Bicycles will even offer a 5-mile tour around some of the key points of the national park for $40, and the rate includes your bicycle rental. If there’s anywhere to ditch the car the Grand Canyon is probably it.
