PETA Calls Out Lufthansa for Transporting Beagles to Their Death

April 16, 2010 at 12:48 PM | by | Comments (2)

Warning: For anyone who has a pet, especially a dog, especially if that dog is a beagle, this is incredibly difficult story to read but an important one too.

It may take a really long time before Lufthansa Airlines wins any Pet-Friendly Airline awards, if ever.

According to this report from PETA, the airline had been transporting at least 50 beagles from a breeder in upstate New York to an animal-testing facility in Scotland. The facility, Charles River Laboratories, has been known to kill and mutilate animals during their drug and pesticide laboratory tests.

The pictures of the beagles in airline shipping crates obtained by PETA are absolutely devastating. And angering. How could Lufthansa do this?

But there is some good news here. Thanks to PETA's public shaming, Lufthansa has already agreed to stop shipping cats and dogs to their death. PETA is now asking that Lufthansa apply this policy to all animals. If you feel the same, you can add your name on a list to Lufthansa vice president Jens Bischof here.

Lufthansa responds to PETA

Lufthansa Cargo and PETA share a common goal: the professional and humane treatment of all animals. We adhere to the strictest international laws and regulations concerning the transport of live animals, and our own internal quality measures even exceed current standards. For years, Lufthansa Cargo has upheld a self-imposed embargo on the transport of apes, as well as of whales and dolphins. In principle we do not transport any captured wild animals. Since April 1, 2010, we also do not transport dogs and cats intended for experimental purposes. Our state-of-the-art Frankfurt Animal Lounge provides exceptional care for all dogs, cats, horses and other animals passing through Germany. Our animal care standards and facilities are known throughout the airline industry as best in their class. We want to continue to live up to this exemplary role, and have invited PETA to meet with us face-to-face together with others for an open dialogue -- in order to find an industry-leading, global solution. Instead of launching a public campaign against us, we ask PETA to work WITH us. Sincerely, Jennifer Janzen, North American Spokesperson, Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo

This is really great news
