Spirit Airlines' Carry-On Baggage Fees Face Government Opposition

It seems like the whole world has been flipping out about Spirit Airlines and their decision to charge for carry-on luggage. We thought it was only a matter of time before an airline pulled something like this, but that doesn’t mean that people are just going to sit back and take it. In fact, it looks like the federal government might get involved in this latest fee-for-all.

Senator Chuck Schumer has called the latest fee a “slap in the face to travelers,” and he wants some of his government buddies to prevent airlines for charging fees like this. He’s chatting with the Treasury Department, as he feels that the carry-on bags are a must-have for travel. Classifying bags as such would ensure that the general ticket price would cover them and would prevent separate fees.

Schumer spoke about how people toss medications and other important stuff into their carry-on luggage, so it’s kind of necessary to carry the bags on board. The Senator said that the Treasury Department better do something to fix this issue, otherwise he’s going to introduce legislation to prevent luggage fees gone wild.

We’re not really sure that the government should get involved with something like this—they’ve probably got some more important issues to deal with. That said, it sure would be nice to have someone like Schumer sticking up for air travelers as fees do get crazy. All we know is that we’re not flying Spirit Airlines anytime soon anywhere, because the airline wasn’t really known for quality or friendliness before, and this latest fee is the kicker.
