Delta Continues Its Crusade For Fleet-wide WiFi

While other airlines are just announcing their intentions to bring in-flight WiFi to the masses, Delta continues to move full speed ahead with its installation.

We’ve used their Gogo service a couple of times now, and it’s always been easy to access and pretty snappy. Even though there’s a fee to use it, it’s one of the charges we really don’t mind paying. Although we were a little sad when WiFi agents in blue shirts handed us a Gogo WiFi card in Atlanta—we thought it was a freebie code, but it was just a card explaining things.

As of the end of last month, Delta has gotten wireless magic installed on almost 75 percent of their domestic mainline fleet. That’s just shy of 400 airplanes, and they’ve got a little more than 100 to go. Delta really wants to continue to be the world’s largest WiFi airline, and as long as they continue at this pace they should be able to maintain their crown.

Many of the old Northwest Airlines jets have had the WiFi update, and the Delta technicians are currently working on installing the bits and pieces on Airbus A320 aircraft. Hopefully the airline will keep putting in the long nights—they average two installs per evening—and can reach their goal of having the whole domestic mainline fleet completed by this summer.

How about some accuracy?

American was first.

AA May Have Been First...

...But Delta has more planes with WiFi at this point. We were just talking about Delta here, and didn't mean to hurt AA's feelings.
