Five Things To Do In South Florida This Weekend (Other Than the Super Bowl)

We’re hardly encouraging you to skip out on the big game this weekend, but if you’re in the Miami area and really aren’t ready for some football, there are a few other options.

Our 5 picks for other things to do in South Florida besides the Super Bowl:

· Super Bowl Saturday Night
This event might be named after the Sunday night action, but it’s more about music and fireworks than footbal. O.A.R., Barenaked Ladies, and Robert Randolph and The Family Band will be performing a free concert in Fort Lauderdale. Gates open at 4pm near the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel, and the festivities are totally open to anyone who wants to attend. The night ends with a fireworks performance over the water a little before 10pm.

· Miami Metro Zoo
This is Florida’s best zoo, and it’s one of the top in the entire country. If you’re up for some animals, then it’s a great time to attend. For those of you that broke the bank financing a pair of tickets to the Super Bowl, the zoo feels your pain. They’re offering half-off admission to football fans with Pro Bowl or Super Bowl tickets. The discount is good through February 16, providing plenty of time to enjoy orangutans, koalas, and much more for about $8 per adult.

· Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
There money is flowing in this year’s Super Bowl town, but James Deering—we looked him up too—built a place that can put even the best mansions to shame. For just $15 per person you’ll have access to the main house as well as acres and acres of botanical gardens all situated on Biscayne Bay. Some even consider this place to be the Hearst Castle of the East. It might not have the name recognition as some other historic homes, but it sure is worth a visit.

· Everglades Tour
The Everglades takes up most of the real estate in South Florida, so it’s probably worth checking it all out. The best way to do so is via airboat of course, and there are plenty of companies ready and willing to take you out to find some gators. The folks at Everglades Holiday Park are a solid option as they are right in Fort Lauderdale and they have airboats with covered passenger compartments—no bugs or sunburn! Fish, birds, and hopefully plenty of alligators will be doing their thing as you float through the swamps.

· World Erotic Art Museum
This place has plenty of exhibits designed to elicit a few giggles from your crew, but if you’ve already been to South Beach then there’s nothing you haven’t seen before. The museum holds the largest collection of erotic art in the country, and they have it on display in over 20 rooms, taking up about 12,000 square feet. Paintings, sculptures and tapestries are just some of the art on display, and tickets are just $15. There’s even a gift shop in case you want to bring something home for your grandmother.
