Kevin Smith is Only One Embarrassed in Southwest Airlines Incident

February 22, 2010 at 9:00 AM | by | Comments (7)

The debate over what to do with overweight passengers on flights flared up dramatically last week when film director Kevin Smith was booted from a Southwest Airlines flight on account of his...umm...girth that required more than one seat. In response to the understandably embarrassing incident, Smith lashed out on Twitter against the airline, even though he was eventually accommodated.

But we're going to call bullshit on some of this. The one thing that really caught us when we first heard the news was the fact that Smith went straight to Twitter, and not to Southwest customer service at the airport or over the phone. Therefore, he didn't take the steps to seek a resolution that benefitted him personally, but he did find one that benefitted him professionally: he got major press attention during the crucial week before his newest film is released.

Aside from the press attention that gets him in the headlines, we doubt that Kevin Smith's hatred toward Southwest will mean anything at all for the airline. A PRNewser article entitled "Southwest Airlines Doesn't Care About Kevin Smith" sums it up perfectly:

Next time you go online to look for a flight from Los Angeles to Dallas, are you going to say to yourself, "You know what, I could fly Southwest, but I'm going to pay MORE to fly on Airline X because Southwest offended Kevin Smith three months ago." No way.

And hey—it was only a few months back that this shocking image caused the public to somewhat understand the dilemma that obese passengers cause for flight crew. And now we're back to the drawing board with this Kevin Smith debacle, it seems.

And I call Bullshit on this story

Does anyone actually do fact checking, seriously. Go listen to his podcast, he gives a very detailed description of what went on. He twittered after spending a fair chunk of time dealing with the employees (and their manager) about the issue. And how was he eventually accomadated? The whole point was that he wasn't looking for them to give him money, he is looking for SWA to admit they were wrong, as well as change their policies. From what I have heard that has not happened yet. He is also doing it not for him, but for the woman that was on his following flight that he took where she was asked to "buy another seat next time" even though she was big, but not that big. Also, sure, the timing is right for the incident to have happened before his movie, but Kevin is more the type of person to share embarassing fobles on a weekly basis on his podcast. I can think of several incidents of the top of my head that anyone wouldn't want to bring to light. He does because he chooses to have his life very public. It just pisses me off that people are thinking it is all for his new film.

hiya

Thanks for you comments! Here's Southwest's blog response, where they actually talked to and apologized to Smith: http://www.blogsouthwest.com/blog/my-conversation-with-kevin-smith-0

I retract a portion of my comment

Thank you for posting the apology letter, however, but I don't think that is what Kevin was looking for. I strongly urge readers to go check Kevin's podcasts specifically smodcasts 106-107. In the first one, it gives Kevin's experience on the first flight, and about his second flight. What everyone is so hung up on is the fact that it was him. The reason that he is really pushing it is how the woman on the second flight was treated. He was able to have the woman on the second flight on with him, and have her side of the experience in smodcast 107. Though Im sure Kevin was embarrassed, he can handle being called fat (he admitted, "Im fat, but Im not that fat") but it is for the others out there that you just don't say that too...like a young women maybe... I am a rather large gentleman myself, (though I don't think I am anywhere near going to get thrown of a plan for it) I had a similar experience when I was 10 years old. I was singled out by my bus driver as she asked me to "move my fat butt over". Now I would be able to let that slide, but at 10 where I had a lot of kids making fun of my weight at my expense, I was embarrassed. When I heard that poor womans story, I could totally feel what she was feeling. Regardless of if it was a judgement call, use some common sense before booting someone of a plane or telling them "in the future, you may want to purchase another seat." I highly doubt that the company will change the policy, but they should under go some more sensitivity training.

You didn't check your facts tonks. Kevin tried getting on an earlier flight, which is something SW is good at doing if they can. Unfortunately, while he had two seats on his other flight there was only one available on the earlier flight. Kevin got what he was entitled to, the ride he purchased originally. More importantly, he cried about SW enforcing the agreement he made with them when buying a ticket in the first place. The rules are there for a reason.

Huh?

Seth, I'm sorry but what does the fact that he had 1 seat or 2 matter. Kevin can fit into 1 seat. He bought 2 because he doesn't want to sit next to people. As far as the rules are concerned, he or his girth fall within the guidlines of swa. Go listen to the podcast. I'm not jumping on this cause I'm a fan, I'm jumping on this because there is a lot of inconsistences with how all the media outlets have been treating this story.

Southwest?

What I find to be bullshit is the mere fact Kevin Smith flew Southwest. Seriously? This guy can't cough up the money to fly business or first class on any other airline? Don't get me wrong, I love Southwest, but if I made the kind of money he makes, i.e. millions, I wouldn't be flying economy.

Because....

He said that he frequents it because it is a commuter plane that goes between oakland and burbank. From the impression that I got it is the most constant route between the 2 ports.
