Tweet Of The Week: A Traveler's Literal Worst Nightmare

February 2, 2010 at 5:10 PM | by | Comment (1)

We love Tuesdays. Why, you ask? Because the day brings many travel tips and quips as "Travel Tuesday" on Twitter, and we're going to share our favorite with you. Got an avid travel twitterer we should follow? Let us know.

Hug your teddy bear tonight and heat up a glass of milk for extra comfort, because today's Travel Tweet is the stuff of scary stories that keep you up at night! Leif Pettersen, a freelance travel journalist who has written the Lonely Planet guides to Romania and Moldova, as well as the 2010 redesigned guide for Tuscany & Umbria, has experienced the reoccurring nightmare that eventually traumatized the frequent traveler:

Had that dream again where I show up at the airport without my passport & the universe goes into slo-mo as I run home to get it. "Nnnooooo!"

Ugh, the thought of that makes us shudder. Back in the days when everyone locked their luggage, we had an absolutely horrible airport experience after realizing that we had locked our suitcases and forgotten the keys at home. Forgetting your passport is worse though, without a doubt.

When he's not freaking out over whether he left his passport in the pillowcase or the hotel room safe, Leif can be found uttering similar sentiments over at his personal travel blog, the cleverly named KillingBatteries.com.

Expired

One year we discovered 24 hours before departure that our son's passport had expired. We had to travel from US to Montreal to catch our flight, then London/Madrid. Ironically, my son had also acquired an EU document, but that was also expired! Oh Crap! What did we do? Go for it! We played dumb all the way, made it to the check-in counter where the agent freaked. Got a "manager", he freaked and told us to wait. Later, he emerged from the back office with a little booklet of rules, said to go to the counter where the agent issued us boarding passes! No more problems. When we got to Madrid, they went through the EU citizen line where only a cursory glance was given to the ID. Next day we went to the Embassy and got a new passport, delivered to us by courier in 48 hours! Huzzah!
