The New Redneck Riviera Airport Is Only Months Away

Remember when Southwest Airlines went all crazy announcing new routes and destinations? One of their additions provided some love to spring breakers across the nation as well as those looking to escape to some Florida panhandle fun. The flights haven’t begun just yet—sorry college students—but the new airport in Panama City is finishing applying those last few coats of paint and that informative TSA signage.

The airport began to test out technical stuff last month, and the first plane recently took the brand new runway for a spin. This place will open on May 23 and will be the first new airport completely designed and opened in the country since 9/11.

We don’t have any details, but apparently the TSA will be testing out some new security system here. It’s hard to imagine that this airport will breathe life into some sort of revolutionary way to dance through the X-ray machines, but we’ll take a wait-and-see attitude. Hopefully it’s a little fancier than their most recent breakthrough.

Besides providing access to and from the panhandle, the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is also doing its part to protect the environment. The new terminal should receive LEED certification, and their storm water plan meets the Outstanding Florida Water Criteria—sounds impressive to us. We have no plans to hit up this section of the Sunshine State anytime soon, but cheap flights, new airport smell, and of course the beach, is kind of tempting.
