It's not just sports enthusiasts and athletes descending on Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The city has also welcomed thousands of volunteers who have traveled from around the world to take tickets, escort athletes, direct crowds and do hundreds of other small jobs that keep the games running smoothly.

Yea, but what do you get in return? Find out after the jump

Olympic volunteers are compensated with free uniforms, meal vouchers, official credentials and the chance to be part of history. Though most pay for their own travel expenses, its worth it to be part of an elite group. More than 77,000 people applied to donate their time but only 25,000 made the cut.

If you missed your chance in Vancouver, there is still plenty of time to apply to volunteer at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Applications will become available this year and in the meantime, you can register to receive email alerts so you can apply as the soon as the program opens. Each volunteer will be given a specific role, as either a Specialist Volunteer (like a doctor or trainer) and Generalist Volunteers who will not need any special skills or training so anyone is welcome to apply.
