Canada's New National Park Will Be Bigger Than Yosemite and Yellowstone Combined

It might be too cold to enjoy right now, but sometime this summer many outdoorsy-types will be heading to Newfoundland and Labrador in search of brand new active travel opportunities.

Canada is lining up the funding to create the county’s newest national park in the province, in hopes of preserving the land for future generations. They also want to ensure that caribou and other wildlife will have a safe place to call home. We can already see the gift shop full of shirts and stuffed bean bag caribou—we’d definitely buy one.

They’re looking to allocate about 11,000 square kilometers near the Mealy Mountains, and once things have been finalized and the official signs have been installed, this will be one of the largest national parks in Canada. Mealy Mountain National Park will be bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined, so it’s a pretty big deal. Too bad it’s a little far from Vancouver, otherwise they could do some sweet cross promotion with the 2010 Olympics.

National Park

Canada's parks are managed to first protect the ecological integrity of the park, and secondarily to allow the public to explore, learn about and enjoy Canada's natural spaces. Classified Toronto
