What Weird Food Keeps You Coming Back To A Country?

February 11, 2010 at 4:00 PM | by | Comments (9)

One night, we were stuck sleeping underneath the departures board at London-Stansted airport, and we had very few pound coins left and a rumbling tummy, begging for food. So we went scrounging around, and that's when we saw them, our future obsession: potato chips in elaborate flavors. There was "Italian Sausage," "Prawn Cocktail," and even "Angus Steak."

Ever since then, we've always attempted to track down the craziest flavor crisps on subsequent trips to Britain. So it makes us wonder what special food items you look forward to purchasing on trips...are you partial to the interesting cereals of Italy? How about the cheeses of Mexico?

Or maybe you just have a great flavor of potato chips to recommend to us? We've already exhausted the offerings at Tesco and Marks & Spencer, so we're in your hands. So...what food items do you look forward to buying when you're abroad?

roast chicken crisps...

When I lived in the UK, my favorite crisps were prawn cocktail and roast chicken. I was horrified to learn when we returned to the States, that Lays didn't have those flavors (had the "u"s teased out of me). Now whenever I return to England, I stock up. But I won't share with my kids..bad mummy.

well..

As a Briton I am obviously hugely offended at this slighting of our fine potato snacks :) Although, if you were prepared to try a few grocery stores, Scampi-flavoured Nik Nats are pretty exceptional...

Irn Bru and deep fried anything

It really has to be in that combo, but Irn Bru with anything deep fried is terrific. Whether it is fish and chips or deep fried pizza. mmm... keeps me going back to Scotland, however I just don't think it tastes as good in England. =)

Not abroad but...

when I went to our office cafeteria (owned by Stephen Starr) the soups of the day was "Philly Cheesesteak Soup." It's true.

everything paprikash!

When I studied abroad in Hungary I couldn't get enough of their paprika flavored chips! They tasted a little big like BBQ but spicier. I still dream about those chips...

I love living in New York City

Finding foreign foods is only as difficult as finding the right store that carries them. Heck, my local supermarket carries my favorite British energy drink: lucozade

Wotsits!

Wotsits and smoky bacon crisps have been my obsession since childhood. oh, sherbet fountains and cadbury's turkish delight sit close to the top of the list too. luckily we have the british depot here so i can feed my cravings without having to hop the pond. sadly i haven't been able to find orange passionade either in england or here, they must have stopped making it.

cinnamon

i only really discovered the power of cinnamon on my first ever trip to america, when someone introduced me to big red. every time i've gone back since, i've stocked up on cinnamon tictacs, cinnamon pita chips, and lots more big red. love it.

Good Topic!

I try to turn every trip in an opportunity to stockpile foods I can't get where I live. And food is not just about local cuisine etc - other cultures have their own sodas, candy, chips etc. One of my favourite place to visit in new countries is the Supermarkets. I make a point to buy things I can't get back home. And its nice when other people go to that same country you can ask them try and bring you back some things. I try and buy practically everything, From special food products unique to cuisine, such as wine, spices, sausages, to household stuff like sauces/recipe mix packets to simple junk food like potato chips or chocolate bars, beer and soft drinks. BTW- You can get packs of Walkers Crisps off of Amazon...
