V Australia's 'Perfect Bag' Debuts, Is Predictably Big and Expensive

A frequent traveler pays particular attention to a few certain things, and doesn't mind paying extra for them. Some examples are frequent flyer status (and club access), a good dinner of the local cuisine, and ideal luggage.

With their "Perfect Bag" project, airline V Australia targeted the latter, and sent New York designer Steven Alan on a lengthy tour of Australia, with the idea that he would return and design the perfect piece of luggage for the V Australia flyers—or indeed anyone. But the resulting product—seen on Steven himself, above—is kind of anticlimactic and for $795, we at least expected some wheels.

According to their press information on the item, V Australia says that the bag "…captures the sights, sounds, flavor and spirit of Australia's favored Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef from firsthand experience on his own recent Perfect Trip, where he embarked on a cultural Australian journey." So that's why it's so expensive, huh? He's stuffed the culture of Australia in there!

This design will probably only appeal to Steven Alan fans, hardcore V Australia flyers, and the occasional person searching for wheel-less expensive luggage with leather. But in our opinion, it's a bit too boxy and too large to fit in the overheard bins on most airplanes, and we refuse to check luggage—especially an $800 soft piece with a tan leather bottom.

If you disagree with us and think this bag is bomb-diggity, or just want to check it out in person, then it'll be available for a limited time (starting from March) in Steven Alan's New York and Los Angeles stores.

Steven Alan Bag

Maybe I'm bias because I'm a fan of Steven Alan (and have been following this story) but it seems as though you're missing some info. This is a limited edition bag of 100. $800 doesn't really seem like a lot when considering that. The size of the bag is based on the dimensions allowed on a vaustralia flight, so no need for checking. This has been talked about for months now. I even saw it on jaunted a while back. And what's with the busted photoshop pictures?

RE: Steven Alan Bag
Those were the pictures sent from V Australia, believe it or not; we just cropped them. And so if the dimensions are perfect for carrying on a V Australia flight, then it can't be the "perfect travel bag" because then it's too still large for travel on most other airlines. Limited edition sounds nice, but I remain unconvinced.
