Trying to flee the freezing temperatures sweeping across the country is natural, but predictable. Instead, do what folks in these frigid destinations do—embrace it and get INTO the cold. The trick to staying toasty is chill-killing gear and lots of bone warming activity. So stop moping around waiting for summer to arrive and head to these five crazy cold places and get your winter wonderland on.

Kohler, Wisconsin

Cold Meter: Extreme A short hour drive from Milwaukee is Destination Kohler, home of the bath and kitchen product empire. Mother Nature has an icy disposition in this state come December through March, when it’s not unusual to see temps plummet to -7 degrees.

Outdoor Adventures: This is huntin’ land, so trap shooting is a way to get your feet wet, especially if assassinating Bambi’s brethren ain’t your thang. Aiming a 20-gauge shot gun at near invisible clays get competitive juices flowing and yelling “pull!” is dead exciting. But there’s also a bevy of other outdoor activities for those looking for something a little less Annie Oakley, like winter archery, ice fishing and ice skating.

Chill Killer: Finger and toe protection is a must as hypothermia is a real threat. Mountain Hard Wear’s gauntlet-style Pulla glove is thin enough to wrap around the trigger and insulated to keep hands warm. Sorel’s waterproof, rubber “Helen of Tundra” tall boot is loaded with Thinsulate on the inside and wool on the outside and fashionable enough to go from the snow to dinner.

Bone Warmer: A visit to Wisconsin is meaningless without cheese curds—so best make them the gooey, deep fried ones guaranteed to raise your body temperature. The Horse & Plow’s pub, a former tavern hangout for 19th century factory workers, serves piping hot beer-battered cheddar curds with a side of ranch dressing.

This being Kohler, naturally, they’ve got water features down pat. After being outside, most head to the Kohler Spa’s deep hot tubs and blissy Swiss showers. More interesting than a massage is the Highland Fling, a hilarious treatment where, following a skin-layer removing coffee and mint oil scrub, buckets upon buckets of hot water are tossed onto your body from head to toe.

It feels like you’re drowning from the dousing, but most (ok, all) make it out okay and with silky smooth skin thanks to the chocolate body butter moisturizer.

Winter Haven: The American Club was once the place stay, eat and relax for the Kohler factory’s immigrant employees who couldn’t afford housing. Now it’s turned into a luxury hotel with two sections. Rooms at the Carriage House are the more modern of the two choices that’s also housed within the Kohler Spa.
