The Best Travel Newcomer Of 2010 Is...

It's that time of the year again; the time when the year just plain ends. Alas, we can't just let 2010 go that easily, especially since travelers spent it both up in the air and up in arms over a crazy range of topics, encompassing everything from nudie scans to tarmac delays. Needless to say, we're ready for 2011, but first we're taking a brief look back at the best of 2010 with the Jaunted Travel Awards,—or as we fondly refer to them—The Jauntys.

The year that was 2010 brought plenty of newcomers into the world of travel, but nothing has been as big and as bad as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. After soaring into the skies in late 2009, the plane flew all over the country, and indeed the world, while testing out switches and levers to make sure the machine is safe for when passengers finally get to sit in the back. That’s why it’s our pick for best travel newcomer for 2010.

Sure there’s been plenty of delays—just ask the folks over at ANA—but that’s just how it goes when it comes to building a brand new composite airplane from scratch. We still can’t figure out where the last few screws fit on some of our IKEA furniture, so we totally understand the stuff the Boeing engineers must have to deal with.

Even though the launch of commercial service will now slip into 2011, the past year brought us a step closer towards better cabin air, bigger overhead bins, comfier seats, and magical window shades, and greater fuel efficiency. If Boeing is able to kick the assembly line into gear in 2011, we wouldn’t even be surprised if the 787 repeats its title of best travel newcomer in 2011.
