The 1980 Classic Slapstick Film 'Airplane!' Will Be Preserved for All Time

December 28, 2010 at 9:03 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's practically the end of the year, and that means that it's time for more than just New Year's Eve planning; important things are going on, like the honoring of the 1980 slapstick movie 'Airplane' as a "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" film, worthy of addition to the National Film Registry in the Library of Congress. It joins 23 other movies in making the cut for 2010's batch to go into the archive, and is now considered a shining representation of what comedy and movies were like in the 20th century.

Just in case we experience another Ice Age—and we don't mean this east coast blizzard, but a real civilization-ending one—future life on this planet could, one day, pickaxe their way down the layers of the world to our former level, where, after unearthing the Film Registry and re-inventing the technology to watch the movies, they also can enjoy Leslie Nielson, Robert Hays, and Julie Hagerty trying to land a jumbo jet. Bonus for future civilizations: the cameo by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Other films to also enter the National Film Registry include The Empire Strikes Back, All the President's Men, The Pink Panther and Saturday Night Fever.

And now that we have you wanting to Netflix the film in its honor, here's a couple classic clips to for you quote throughout the day. And ah yes—of course—"don't call me Shirley."
