REDjet, the Caribbean’s First Low Cost Carrier, Plans Flights for $9.99

When we’re sitting in paradise, we’re usually pretty content focusing on the sand between our toes and the warm sunshine, but apparently there are plenty of other folks that are always thinking about what destination is next. Those are the kind of people that REDjet is looking to target with their new service, as they’re hoping to be the Caribbean’s first low cost carrier.

The airline hasn’t started things up just yet, but they have hired a bunch of employees—hopefully some of them are pilots—and they’re thinking about getting operations up and running at the beginning of December. The planes will be MD-80s formerly flown by American Airlines.

REDJet will be based out of Barbados, and in true low cost carrier fashion, one-way flights will start at just $9.99. That means you’re going to need to bring your own in-flight snacks as well as master the art of shoving as many bikinis and flip flops into one carry-on bag.

Initial destinations will include Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. However, if things go well, we’d expect some more islands to be added to the route map before too long. Unfortunately there aren’t any plans to fly in and out of the United States just yet, but there are plenty of Americans looking for warm weather and cheap flights so we’ll keep an eye out for an announcement.
