Honolulu Airport Begins 12 Years of Much-Needed Renovating

If your favorite part of Hawaii was riding the Wiki-Wiki bus at the Honolulu International Airport, you’re going to be pretty upset about what we have to tell you.

Although it still has maintained its island vibe and aloha spirit, the airport where most visitors begin their trip to paradise has definitely been showing its age. One of the first steps in an over $2 billion renovation is opening up next month, as a brand new international arrivals corridor will open to meet jet-lagged guests arriving after long flights from across the globe. That means fewer chances to ride the Wiki-Wiki in and around the airport.

Many will miss the forced greeting from the warm tropical breezes, but after a long, stuffy flight a little air-conditioning might be more than welcome. Even the governor of Hawaii seemed pretty pumped about the new airport hallway, as apparently she’s had to defend her home airport from trash talk from other government leaders. We’d definitely have to agree with the criticism, because as charming as it might be, the place still kind of feels like something that came straight out of Mike Brady’s architecture firm.

There’s still lots left to complete to spend the entire airport upgrade budget, and the renovations to the airport are expected to take around 12 years to finalize. Expect upgraded check-in counters, new baggage claim areas, snazzy restaurants, and all the other stuff that you’d expect from a major international airport. Just remember that the latest upgrade is just for those visiting from overseas, and since we last checked Hawaii’s still a state, so no airport upgrades yet for those visiting from the rest of the nifty fifty.

I just flew in tonight for the first time...maybe I should have waited 12 years to check it out...
