KLM is the First Airline on Foursquare, and They're Giving Away Free Stuff

November 12, 2010 at 8:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

Although we've already seen an airline give flyer miles to people who check in at their airport lounge on Foursquare and a badge that gets you $50 off a trip, Foursquare hasn't actually had an airline be on Foursquare...until now with Dutch carrier KLM.

You can be friends with KLM at their foursquare account here, but oh that's not all—it gets better. KLM is using Foursquare as a way to personally reward passengers for flying on them. The project, "KLM Surprise"—which only lasts until the end of November unless they decide to extend it—watches Foursquare checkins of people to all of their possible venues, including flights, lounges, whole airports and even their hangars, for some reason.

When a passengers checks in at the main hub of Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, the "KLM Surprise Team" tracks down as much information about the person as possible from their social media accounts, and then finds them at the airport to deliver an appropriate gift.

Confused? Here's two success stories from AboutFoursquare.com:

One customer, Willem, was going to miss his team’s biggest soccer game of the year while on a trip to New York. KLM surprised him with a Lonely Planet guide to New York with the best soccer bars highlighted to make sure he wouldn’t miss the game. They found that another customer, Perry, was celebrating his birthday and surprised him with a birthday card and glass of champagne.

Apparently KLM is even sharing the gifts they're delivering by posting them on Facebook.

We really, truly believe that KLM's genius use of Foursquare is taking airline service to a whole new level. What personal attention and thoughtfulness! Also, it shows that KLM is now afraid of social media, and in turn that puts the airline at a human level, where passengers are far quicker to develop brand loyalty.

What would you want KLM's Surprise agents to deliver to you at an airport? Let everyone know below!
