JetBlue Heads North to Alaska, Southwest Goes South to Mexico, and More New Routes This Week

Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of all the new route announcements that come our way, so we’ve complied a little bit of a rundown below. As long as you can afford the fares, this should definitely help add to your passport stamp collection.

· JetBlue:
Even though in-flight WiFi arrived in Alaska this week, there’s another airline that’s bringing even better entertainment to Anchorage. JetBlue announced their 65th destination this week with seasonal flights to and from Anchorage and Long Beach, California, beginning on May 26 of next year. Flights start at just $119 each way—not too bad—and are available for booking today. Just remember your camera, as JetBlue is asking for pictures in case you can see Russia from your hotel room!

· SAS:
There are a few new options in and out of Norway and Denmark this week, as SAS looks to expand their offerings around the globe. First, the airline of Scandinavia will start Oslo to New York service beginning in March of 2011. They’ll also start up service direct between Copenhagen and Shanghai sometime over the winter. New York’s new route will be a daily option aboard Airbus A330-300 planes, and the route to the east will utilize Airbus A340-300 aircraft five times per week. Not settling with just international routes, there’s also new options within Europe as well, like Oslo to Munich and Stockholm to Venice.

· KLM:
A blast from the past, as KLM is bringing back its Miami to Amsterdam nonstop option beginning on March 27. The new flight will run four times per week, and will have room for just shy of 300 passengers to head over the Atlantic.

What’s most unique about this route is that KLM will be sending an MD-11 aircraft back and forth for this flight. You’ll immediately recognize the plane on the runway as it has three engines—two under the wings and one right underneath the vertical stabilizer. Plenty of airlines are still flying these jets for cargo, but KLM is one of the last using them for passenger service. So not only do you get to see Europe, but you get a little bit of an airplane history lesson.

· Spirit Airlines:
The new routes continue this week with an increase in cheapy options from Spirit Air. Just be prepared to say no to some of their crazy fees, and you’ll be up in the air with a little extra cash in your wallet. Charleston, West Virginia, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Plattsburgh, New York, Dallas, and Niagara Falls are all getting new service aboard Spirit jets.

All the new cities will be heading to both Fort Lauderdale and Myrtle Beach, with the exception of Dallas—as Texans will only have the option of heading to the Sunshine State. The new flight options begin between January and May, so just in time to beat the winter weather.

· Southwest Airlines:
It’s not technically an international option aboard Southwest Airlines, but they are linking up with Volaris to send their passengers south of the border. Starting on November 12 you can visit Southwest’s website to book tickets through a code share agreement to places like Cancun, Mexico City, and Guadalajara.

Southwest is still working on their reservations systems to ensure international travel capabilities, but they’ve implemented what they call "International Connect" as an interim fix. The only bummer is that you won’t be able to cash in your Rapid Rewards for a freebie trip, but hopefully that’ll change in the future.
