Matthew McConaughey Begins Filming East Texas' Answer to 'Fargo'

Matthew McConaughey isn’t afraid to show off his chest or his local Texas roots, and he’ll be doing both this fall for Bernie, the East-Texas centric movie he’s currently shooting near Austin.

The movie is based on a bizarre true story about a rich widow in Huntsville, TX who befriends an assistant funeral director. He ends up killing her, stealing her money, and then pretending she's still alive for some time after. The movie's director, Richard Linklater, says, "It's my 'Fargo' in East Texas, where I grew up, so it's crazy local with fifty characters." Sounds interesting, right?

The movie, which also stars Jack Black as the funeral director and Shirley MacLaine as the rich widow, is being shot entirely on location. Last week, they set up shop in a large house off of Howard Lane in North Austin, which will play Shirley's house in the film.

In addition to North Austin, so far, Linklater has added some small town local flavor by shooting at the courthouse and town square in Georgetown, TX and today they are filming in downtown Lockhart, TX, a small town just south of Austin.

The stars have also been spotted enjoying the area with their families when not working. Just last week, Matthew and his kids were spotted playing in an Austin playground.

They kicked off the shoot last month at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa, where it's rumored Matthew and his family are also staying. The Texas-sized resort, which is located in Lost Pines, about 40 minutes east of Austin, includes a championship golf course, spa, water park and horseback riding on its 405-acres. Nightly rates start around $189.
