THE RACE
The racers start out this leg by helping with renovations to the Asebi D/A Primary School in Ghana. Then they get relief from the horrible heat in the next stop, the Arctic Circle, TAR's first time visiting the region. The tatted guy tells his cabbie to bring them to the Arctic Circle, but his girlfriend explains that Swedish Lapland isn't in Ghana.
Because of limited flights, teams are put on the same plane, but they have the option of getting tickets on their own. The Gleeks, who missed their Princeton graduation that day, arrive at the airport first, unaware of the the earlier flight. The YouTubers call the airport from the cab and find out they can get a connecting flight out of Frankfurt two hours earlier by going to the Lufthansa office. They share their plan with Miss Kentucky and her dad. The docs find out about the early flight by going online, and they team up with the home shopping hosts. The other teams eat their dust.
In Sweden, racers head to IceHotel. The docs take the lead with the home shopping hosts on their trail. There, YouTubers hit a speed bump, where they must sit on ice chairs for 10 minutes, which is uncomfortable for the younger shorts-clad YouTuber. "It feels like needles are sticking into my butt cheeks," he says. The next clue is in Swedish and carved on a big slab of ice. The racers all get help from locals to decipher it.
ROADBLOCK
The clue directs them to Fjellborg's Lodge, where there's a road block. Racers must mush dogs in summer training sleds and snatch five flags along the course. For every flag missed, they must do a penalty lap. Somehow, YouTube dad steals first and has a ball, yelping like crazy. In fact, everyone has such fun, it makes us want to mush. Miss Kentucky misses a flag and has to circle around again. The hairdresser and hairy come in last when they don't see the sign for the dog park. After racing with the doggies, contestants have to go to Vassijaure Train Station for a detour.
DETOUR
In this detour, teams can choose Bed or Sled. For Sled, teams must speed down a course in less than 1 minute and 58 seconds on a crazy-fast contraption called a techsled. If they go past that time, they have to do it all over again. For Bed, they have to pitch a tent (or goahti) for the Sami, descendants of the earliest Scandinavian nomads, using natural materials and use animal hides to make traditional beds.
The YouTubers struggle to pitch the tent. The docs choose sledding; Nat gets it, but Kat gets stuck in the plastic fence. Miss Kentucky and dad finish the course exactly at 1:58, but have to redo it because they must beat the time.
Tinkerbell freezes because she's petrified of going down the steep hills. She has trouble sledding. "Well,, don't even try or anything," Peter Pan yells. She refuses to do it over. "I'm done. I can't, it scared the ---- out of me." So Tinkerbell and Peter Pan switch to the beds challenge. The tatted couple easily glides down the course. When one of the volleyballers crashes and her techsled falls over the edge of the mountain, they switch to beds. The Gleeks have several do-overs before switching detours.
Worried about being in last place, the hairdresser and hairy decide to use their coveted express pass, which allows them to bypass the detour and go straight to the pit stop.
PIT STOP
The pit stop for this leg is at the Norwegian Border. The docs make it there first and win a trip to Belize. "We want to be the first women to win 'The Amazing Race,'" the docs say. Miss Kentucky nabs second place and the home shopping hosts come in third.
OUSTED
It was a tight finish between the volleyballers and the Gleeks. The Gleeks' musical mojo didn't help them on this leg; they came in last and were eliminated. It was a huge upset, since the a cappella singers came in first in the last leg. Nevertheless, they skipped away, jumped and clicked their heels in the air, and sang a ditty, of course.
NEXT WEEK
In Norway, docs have to chow down on some kind of animal head while one of the home shopping hosts dangles on a chord and tells her BFF to shut up. Uh-oh, the cheap HSN gloves may be coming off.
