The Battle for Toronto City Airport Begins Between Air Canada and Porter

October 12, 2010 at 10:35 AM | by | Comments (2)

We knew that Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has been the happening airport in Toronto for quite some time, and especially since Porter Airlines is proving to the world how successful the little airport can be. Air Canada has been trying to gain access to the airport, and now it looks like we have a date for when there will finally be a little competition at the airport.

Most of the paperwork has been filled out and signed, and it looks like Air Canada—through the help from one of their regional airline buddies—will be heading to and from the airport beginning in February. Their initial flight schedule will be limited to just Montreal, but with 15 nonstop options throughout the day, there’s plenty of availability.

Porter Airlines knew competition would arrive at their home airport sooner than later, and they’re ready for the challenge. The airline recently opened its second lounge at the airport, which is good news as there had been some reports that their main lounge was getting a little tired.

The new lounge opened late last month and will be for passengers traveling within Canada, as the preexisting lounge will be for those heading to the United States. Things at the new lounge are pretty similar to their first, as access will remain free to all travelers. Expect complimentary coffee, espresso drinks, soft drinks, teas, and plenty of snacks. There’s free WiFi and plenty of iMacs in case you forgot your laptop back at the office. No free adult beverages in the lounge, but those are free once you hit the skies.

We’re rooting for Porter Airlines in their battle at Billy Bishop, and we’re hopeful that they can maintain their high level of service and amenities when facing the deep pockets of Air Canada. Hopefully we’ll even get some flight deals as the two carries begin to battle it out.
