THE RACE
In Ghana, teams have to cab it to Akotoku Boxing Academy in Jamestown. And already trouble begins. The docs get stuck with a bum cabbie who has no idea where he's going and won't follow directions. At the boxing center, the racers hit a roadblock.
ROADBLOCK
In this physical fitness test of a roadblock, one team member must properly wrap her hands, hit the speed bag for 60 seconds, then jump rope for 60 seconds with no mess-ups. Luckily, the home shopping ladies box, so they have an edge. Brook, aka Rocky, easily completes the roadblock, doling kisses to her coach along the way. The volleyballers finish the task second, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell fall to third because PP was trying do fancy footwork with the jump rope, got tangled up and had to start all over.
Next, they have to go to a supply depot in the Dodowa District. The Gleeks sing, "Drive faster! Please drive faster!" to their poor cabbie. Somehow the ditty works and the Gleeks' cab driver passes the home shopping hosts to steal the lead.
At the following stop, the racers have to fill wheelbarrows with supplies as specified on a list and wheel it all to the Asebi D/A Primary School. The Gleeks have no problem doing the seemingly easy task, but the others don't follow the directions. The home shopping ladies and the YouTubers only load one wheelbarrow and have to go back to get another. The volleyballers bring two wheelbarrows but forget a trowel, so they have to wheel the heavy load back to get it. Tatted guy gets pissed at his girlfriend teammate for not following the directions. "It's fifth-grade reading," he shouts to her. "You have no common sense in your whole body."
Once the teams get the right supplies, they must take a geography quiz and identify Ghana on a map. Surprisingly, the Ivy League Gleeks make multiple guesses before locating Ghana. "It's pretty embarrassing that we're in a country we can't even pick out on a map," Jonathan says. "Our friends at Princeton are probably gonna grill us for that."
The tatted couple also has a hard time finding Ghana. "Dude, we are the dumbest people known to earth, literally," tatted guy says. The lagging docs are last to do the quiz, but they quickly identify Ghana on the map. Afterward, the teams hit a detour.
DETOUR
In this detour, teams choose between Bicycle Parts or Language Arts. In Bicycle Parts, racers must use a stick to quickly roll a bike rim back and forth on uneven terrain without letting it fall. In Language Arts, teams choose a proverb with eight highlighted phrases; each phrase has a corresponding symbol in a native visual alphabet. A decoder helps translate the words into symbols and then racers must go to a mural-sized cloth to find all of the symbols in the correct sequence, like a word search.
Miss Kentucky and her dad, who were in the back of the pack, choose bike rim rolling. The pageant queen has a hard time pushing the rim across the field but finally gets it. The Gleeks redeem their lost geek cred by quickly completing the Language Arts detour.
The other teams choose Language Arts, but they don't see the decoder mural on the side of the building, so they all waste a ton of time trying to figure out the challenge and then switch to the rim race.
If tatted guy didn't already cement his title as this season's d-bag, he does it here. He throws his rim in frustration and when his girlfriend tries to calm him down, he screams, "Shut up!" It takes his girlfriend having an asthma attack before he lets up on her.
Meanwhile, the YouTubers fall behind when they have to switch to the rim race. The blazing heat and running are too much for the elderly YouTube dad. "I can't do it," he says to his son. "Sorry, Kevin." YouTube dad has to get medical help and while he gets checked out, he cries. "I feel so bad." After getting some water, YouTube dad musters up the strength to finish the task, albeit slowly.
PIT STOP
Teams have to find the home of Awusa Ntso. Maybe that serenading the cabbie bit works; the Gleeks arrive first and each wins $5,000—"to buy maps of Africa," they say. In a big surprise, Miss Kentucky and her dad come from behind to snatch second. Peter Pan and Tinkerbell come in third.
OUSTED
The docs had a lot of setbacks with cabs and have difficulty finding the pit stop, but they manage to arrive eighth. The YouTubers come in ninth. Dad is apologetic for landing his team in last place. "My body gave out," dad says, in tears. Then Phil busts out with news that this was a nonelimination leg, and the YouTubers cry for joy.
NEXT WEEK
The racers go to the Arctic, where they have a ball dog sledding and break out in fights over other snow sports.
