Delta Now Demands $25 For Your First Checked Bag

We dubbed it "Biggest Travel Media Story of 2009" and it looks like the issue is here to stay: airline baggage fees. Making an attempt to follow the different levels of extra charges at each airline is futile, the fees change so often while new ones are added. But luckily, the brilliant folks at SmarterTravel have given it their best go with an ultimate guide to such fees.

As one of the biggest proponents of doing away with baggage fees altogether, even if it won't happen now that airlines have tested the fresh money, we are heartbroken yet again to hear that the fees are going up!

Will the extra fee madness ever end?!

Here's the lowdown on the raises in fees, as expertly gathered by SmarterTravel. Note that one fee is decreasing, but sadly not by enough to get us excited.

· AirTran raises overweight bag fee (51-70 pounds) to $49 from $39. Begins to charge $79 for bags over 71 linear inches in size.
· Delta (also Northwest) raises its first checked bag fee to $23 online or $25 at the airport from $15/$20. Accordingly, the second checked bag fee goes up to $32 online or $35 at the airport from $25/$30 before. However, Delta has lowered their pet-in-cabin fee to $100 from $150.
· Hawaiian Airlines updates their first checked bag to differentiate between checking online or at the airport. It'll be $15 online or $20 at the airport. Meanwhile, they've raised the second bag fees to $25 online or $30 at the airport.
· JetBlue is the only cool airline in the bunch, lowering their overweight bag fees to $50 for bags (51-70 lbs) from $75, and to $100 for bags (71-99 lbs) from $175.
· Midwest gave into the pressure to raise their overweight bag fees as well, going up to $75 for bags (51-100 lbs) from $50. BUT! They lowered oversized bag fees to $75 from $80 for bags between 63 and 110. Okay we are getting confused now.
· Virgin America made a minor, but still notable change of raising the fee for your third through tenth checked bags from $15 to $20, but then who checks ten bags?
