The operation is part of a new effort to ease California's overpopulation of Chihuahuas, which make up more than 30% of all shelter dogs in the state. “We’ve never been able to really satisfy the demand for small dogs here in New York City and the Northeast,” Gail Buchwald, senior vice president of the ASPCA adoption center in New York told The Associated Press. "Transporting the dogs from coast to coast has always been the biggest obstacle," she added.
Thanks to Virgin America, the Chihuahuas got first-class treatment including a red-carpet departure from San Francisco, doggie treats and toys. The mission was such a success, for both the dogs and Virgi, that they are planning more trips for the dogs in the future.
