A Stranded Joan Rivers Asks: 'Do Terrorists Wear Manolo Blahniks?'
The story of Sunday's security breach and flight delays at Newark airport continues to worsen, especially now that we've heard it from the other end, from an arriving flight. But wait, it turns out the confusion inconvenienced a celebrity! Stop the presses!
Good old Joan Rivers was all ready to board her flight from Costa Rica back to Newarkon Continental Airlines, no lesswhen she was not allowed to fly thanks to heightened security and the fact that the name on her ticket didn't match the one on her passport. Apparently, her passport reads "Joan Rosenberg AKA Joan Rivers," and we don't even see how her local passport-issuing agency let that fly. Still, the issues at Newark over the weekend combined with the TSA "Secure Flight" rules, which requires the name on your ticket to match the one on your ID, almost stranded her in Central America with only $100 in cash.
It just gets better! ...
Rivers detailed the ordeal to the Daily News, then picked up by Gothamist:
If I were going to make up an alias, I wouldn't pick Rosenberg. I'd pick Jolie or Pitt. Do terrorists wear Manolo Blahniks? I can tell you Donna Karan does not make anything that hides a bomb... I tried the tears; they didn't work. I tried reasoning. I couldn't bribe because I didn't have any money. I said 'I'm going to have a heart attack over this,' so the woman called the paramedics.
But Joan, who we're sure caused quite a scene, luckily aroused the pity of a cab driver who convinced a friend to drive her 6.5 hours to the main airport in San Jose, where she found a flight that would accept her questionable ticket/passport combination. She's lucky she's a celebrity...of sorts.
