Macau’s nightlife is ever expanding and changing. What started off as post-gambling hot spots in most of the hotels, nightlife has now spread out of the resorts and into local areas like the Outer Harbour.

But before we head away from the casinos, there’s actually a pretty cool bar/lounge inside the MGM. The Lion's Bar, tucked at the back side of the main casino, is where music lovers can go to listen to a featured band. When I was in Macau, the eclectic cover band called Lockdown rocked a packed house. If they’re in town when you are—make sure to see them.

After the jump, some karaoke and Cirque du Soleil

Step outside of the MGM and head down the street to pub row. Party at bars like Moonwalker—open from 4pm to 4am—but don’t get there until after 10pm. There's also Casablanca Bar, which offers happy hour from 6-8pm and MP3 Bar, which boasts of itself: “where people meet when the sun goes down."

The Outer Harbour, known as the Docks, is a great place to people watch. Take a seat at one of the lively sidewalk bars on Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Start there early in the evening, then hit a dance club, such as Cubic and D2. These popular clubs get internationally known DJs every weekend.

For something a little more touristy than local, the 180 Lounge and Grill on the 60th floor in the Macau Tower offers live music nightly and breathtaking views of Macau’s harbors.

Moving on, the locals love karaoke and there’s a wide selection of karaoke bars around town, including high-end ones with great private rooms. A small intimate club called 21 Century Karaoke Lounge and Bar has private karaoke booths with all the gear included to cater to those looking for privacy.

If bar hopping isn’t your thing, and you are looking for a more subdued evening at the theater, take in ZAIA—the first permanent Cirque du Soleil show in Asia; the story is a neophyte’s perception of stars, planets, space and infinity in a fantasy adventure with celestial creatures. The 1,800 seat theater at the Venetian Macau-Hotel-Resort was custom-built for ZAIA for $150 million dollars, and is a sight to see all unto itself.

In the same vein as ZAIA, don’t miss Dragon’s Treasure at the 360° Bubble Theater in the new City of Dreams Resort. The resort’s theme is based on a sumptuous underwater design. The 10-minute multi-media production is a visual extravaganza telling the story of four Dragon Kings and their magical kingdoms. Don’t think this is for kids. It’s actually a romantic way to kick off an evening in Macau.
