You Won't Believe What We Did Yesterday

Boarding our plane at Brussels-Charleroi Airport

Tangoing with the enemy?! Yes, it's true—yesterday, after a few years away (since 2006!) from them in which time much has changed—we flew on Ryanair.

Our flight was only two hours long, but that's the mean flight time for this European low cost airline, which is so low cost that they're notorious for two things: selling flights for 1 Euro and brainstorming all sorts of hidden fees. Since we scored this one-way flight for two people for exactly 14 Euro total and then bragged all about it, we were fully expecting to get what we paid for—the worst flight of our life. Instead, we experienced one of the most eye-opening flights of our life, in both good and bad ways.

We're kind of still fully processing our thoughts on the flight, so be prepared for next week when we unleash fully on what went down and what makes us both fearful of and optimistic for the future of air travel. But we will leave you with this: we actually did the flight with no extra fees levied!

RyanAir -- let me guess

Did you: 1. get frisked? 2. fly the plane because no pilots would? 3. need to serve coffee and snacks to yourself? 4. pay one euro to pee? 5. lose your one carry-on bag? 6. have snakes on the plane?

Charleroi

When I lived in Belgium I used to fly Ryanair somewhat regularly from Charleroi. Yeah it was a pain to get to the airport but back then Ryanair was worth it. That was before they had all the baggage fees and you could actually check a bag without paying for it! That being said the airport itself sucked in comparison with the larger Brussels Airport. It was always crowded and the bus to get there was never on time. Also, the airport always smelled like someone was smoking pot. I eventually discovered that it was the people working in the small snack shop they have there. Kinda strange she was never caught, considering the Belgium really has somewhat strict drug laws for that part of the world.

People who knock Ryanair...

Are people who have never flown them! I have flown Ryanair twice a month for 3 years, only once have I ever had a problem with them, and a minor one at that, they demanded I deleted the photos i took of the plane inside.

agreed

i quite like ryanair - as long as you play by their rules, they're fine. better than easyjet, and i have a weird crush on michael o'leary..
