The Ryanair Pay-to-Pee Scheme Is Totally Happening

January 20, 2010 at 9:00 AM | by | Comment (1)

We are due to fly the on low-cost, much-hated European carrier Ryanair in just over 48 hours, and already we're freaking out about if our carry-on bags are small enough to avoid extra fees. But now we're worried about even more than that! Ryanair has reaffirmed their commitment to making the dreaded in-flight "Pee Fee" happen.

At first, the announcement of charging 1 Euro per airplane bathroom visit was a publicity stunt, but when Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary gets a money-making scheme in his head...you know it's not a joke. Ryanair is reportedly looking to install pay toilets on flights under one hour, which would affect most UK-Ireland routes and the occasional other European short hop. Luckily our flight comes in at just over an hour, so we'd not have to deal with keeping a Euro coin handy just in case, but still.

It gets worse, after the jump.

Now get this: Ryanair wants to have only one pay bathroom on 50 of their planes. Next thing you know, we'll have to reserve a potty break in advance. Regardless, Ryanair promises that this fee will bring down airfare prices another 5%, but considering that our tickets cost a total of 20 Euro, we don't know how much lower they can go. And didn't O'Leary pledge to donate the pee fee to the incontinent anyways?

Crazy!!

Mick has finally lost it! When the coin mechanisms get jammed, his maintenance and delays will spiral, as passengers put all sorts of coinage and washers into them. Then of course how will he stop passengers holding the door for the open for the next passenger. Will he employ another crew member to police it? What a great idea to save money and cut fares! Or are they running short on publicity?
