American Offering Bonus Miles for Donations to Haiti Relief Efforts

If you're looking to donate to a Haiti earthquake relief charity but don't want to wait till George Clooney's MTV celebrity-filled telethon on Friday, American Airlines is offering an alternative through the American Red Cross.

Make a contribution to the American Red Cross and the airline will award your do-gooding with bonus AAdvantage miles. A minimum $50 donation will get you 250 miles and a pledge of $100 or more will earn you 500 miles.

To make your donation, visit American Airline's website or the Red Cross's site. When you receive an email acknowledging your donation from the Red Cross, forward it to ReliefMiles@aa.com. Don't change the subject line, but be sure to include your AAdvantage number in the email. The name on the donation receipt must match the name on the AAdvantage account. The mileage promotion is available through February 28.

Those who want to go beyond a monetary gift and perhaps lend a hand at the disaster sites will have to find other ways to help out. Despite Twitter reports that American is offering free Haiti flights to nurses and docs, the airline has so such plan. American has halted all flights to Haiti until mid-February.
