· United
If you need to make any changes to your ticket it’s likely that you’ll need to pay a fee; however, if you’re within 24 hours of when you booked a seat you are free to cancel. Within 24 hours you’ll be permitted to request a full refund, and then can take your cash to another airline if you’d like. Just remember that the tickets need to be purchased through United’s website or through their telephone reservations people.
· Continental
We’ve used Continental’s refund policy several times before, and it couldn’t be easier. Within 24 hours of your ticket purchase you can get rid of that flight you booked without thinking for a full refund, and it can all be done online. If you wait too long there will be plenty of fees, so make your mind up within one day after booking.
· Virgin America
In-flight WiFi just isn’t for everyone, and if you decide to cancel your trip on Virgin America you should be fine. If a change or cancellation is requested within 24 hours from the time of booking, you’re fee-free, and the refund will be issued in your original form of payment. They might be a little sad on the inside, but your wallet will be happier.
· American and US Airways
Don’t worry if your favorite airline doesn’t have an oops-I-need-to-cancel policy. American Airlines and US Airways won’t give you your money back, but you can hold a ticket for 24 hours for free without putting any money down, which is just as good.
· Southwest Airlines
They don’t have any change fees, so your funds can usually be put towards a new flight. We gave them a call this morning, and the airline that loves bags will do a courtesy hold on your ticket until the following day at midnight if you’re the indecisive type.
· JetBlue
Finally, Jetblue doesn’t appear to offer any holds or refunds for its tickets. So make sure you know what you’re doing before your click purchase. However, you can always call as soon as possible and be really, really nice—you never know.
