It's Business Class Or Bust For London Bobbys

After this news, there’s definitely a London Bobby or two getting the corporate credit card taken away. Apparently, many Metropolitan police officers thought it was a great idea to start buying business class tickets for all of Scotland Yard’s travel needs. Not surprisingly, the spending spree didn’t go unnoticed, and now taxpayers are about £12 million in the hole.

Trying their best to be proper shoppers, officers booked business class flights to destinations across the globe including Australia, the United States, and South Africa. Let’s just hope they remembered to enter their frequent flyer numbers.

One of the best working vacations was a £10,000 trip to Antigua to check things out before the Duchess of York arrived with her children. Another good one was a trip to Mauritius by a group of royal protection officers. They needed to arrive weeks beforehand to ensure that Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy would be safe, apparently from all those sharp sticks in umbrella cocktails.

The general rule is that business class trips are allowed for Scotland Yard officers on a case by case basis; however, these trips need to be approved and signed off on by a supervisor. It sounds like a lot of supervisors don’t have too much ink left in their pens. There doesn’t appear to be an immediate corrective action plan in place, but all the Ryanair tickets that will be booked in attempt to fix the situation will be punishment enough.
