Ryanair Wants A Bigger Portion Of Aer Lingus's Irish Stew

Where: Ireland
September 8, 2009 at 8:59 AM | by kjb | 0 Comments

Depending on your opinion of Ryanair, their newest move could either be awesome or a total disaster. The cheap, no frills airline is looking to buy their Irish pals at Aer Lingus. They’ve tried on and off since 2006 to take over the airline, but the Irish government and the European Union keep putting the kibosh on the deal.

Most recently, Ryanair head honcho Michael O’Leary stated that his airline would ultimately succeed in buying their rival. Aer Lingus doesn’t seem as opposed to the idea as they once were, and they might not have a choice since they’ve announced that they have a little problem with burning through their cash too quickly.

Ryanair already has a 29 percent share in the airline, which is even more than the Irish government owns in Aer Lingus. O’Leary is predicting that within 18 months the company will need to be rescued, and it appears that he is ready to do so. Our expertise isn’t in the business arena, but it seems that the company with the most cash wins. Too bad, as we're thinking O’Leary probably isn’t the best person to negotiate with.

We just hope that, if Aer Lingus does move into the Ryanair camp, that Ryanair is merciful enough to leave the pay-to-pee and pay-for-Pringles-as-inflight-meal ideas back on European land; we like our transatlantics to at least feed us. Best of luck to you Aer Lingus; we're on your side.
