Frontier Airways Joins The Club, Raises Checked Baggage Fees

September 8, 2009 at 4:54 PM | by Omri | 2 Comments

Frontier Airlines, having recently been acquired by Republic Airways, is wasting no time making their new owners some money. The airline is adjusting their baggage fees upwards and will now charge even for the first checked bag.

We're actually kind of pleased that we get to write this story; it's been a few hours since we posted about an airline raising its fees, and we were starting to get a little anxious:

Frontier Airlines said on Friday it was raising baggage fees and reducing a fee to change tickets. The Denver-based airline said it would begin charging $20 for the first checked bag and $30 for the second, up from $15 and $25. The higher fees are for tickets bought beginning Tuesday and apply to travel beginning Oct. 1.

No worries though. Frontier also announced they're reducing ticket change fees from $150 to $100. It's nice of them to look out for the relatively few passengers who change their tickets after purchase while raising fees on everyone else. Pretty effective too. We feel better already.

For what it's worth, Frontier's Classic and Classic Plus passengers can still check two bags for free. So if you're a Classic Plus member who finds yourself needing to change tickets all the time, congratulations; today's your lucky day. The rest of us will be over in the corner sulking.

    I get it

I understand it's frustrating. I am a flight attendant for a "low cost carrier" (which they all are these days) and I am constantly amazed by the expectations and entitlement that people come on board with. First of all let me just say that I was LIVID when I found out that we were going to start charging for checked bags. Mostly because now we have WAY too many carry ons and not enough room on board for them, which has added to the things that passengers yell at me for, but I've come to see it is neccisary. Think about it, airline tickets have not gone up with inflation much since the 60's or 70's. Have you looked around the airport lately and seen the trailer park trash that can regularly afford to fly? Sure it sounds like a "brilliant idea" to just make the ticket price higher and include everything in that one price (which paying a higher price for everything would be one of your options if you bought a ticket from my airline's website) but if you understand the industry at all, you know that just raising a ticket price $4 can cause sales to plunge. It's just not that simple, they have to make revenue somewhere. I also understand those of you saying that these fees were put into place when fuel was high and since it's gone down you don't understand why the fees are still here. The answer is simple, the extra fees they charged didn't come close to absorbing the fuel costs the airlines were paying so they had to borrow millions of dollars in order to keep operating. They are now trying to pay those millions back. Some of you might say "that's not my problem". Unfortunately, if you want to fly, which is an amazing privilege in my opinion, than it is very much "your problem". I have taken 2 pay cuts in the past year (which wasn't much to start out with) and all I have to say is that I want at least some of my pay back before passengers get anything for free. In the mean time, remember that the flight attendants are not the enemy, we are in this with you.

    Frontier provides a choice

Just so you understand, Classic and Classic Plus are fare types. For $25-30 more than the base Economy fare, Classic includes 2 free bags, free live TV, free seat assignments, 125% mileage credit in Early Returns and lower change fees. Anyone can get it if they book at frontierairlines.com. Frontier is better than most airlines in this regards because the others will charge hundreds of dollars more for a fare that includes free bags.
