The Impossibly High Burj Dubai Will Have 124th-Floor Observation Deck

September 28, 2009 at 1:08 PM | by JetSetCD | 0 Comments

To tell you the truth, we're torn on the issue of tourism in Dubai. Is it a theme park of a city that caters to tourists versus travelers, or is it worth the visit for the unique experiences? Who knows when we'll find out since the place is so firmly out of budget anyways.

Just in case you also like to entertain the thought that a trip to Dubai is in your future, you'll either be delighted or scared shitless to learn that the famous Burj Dubai skyscraper is due to have its observation deck on the 124th floor. Of course the 160+ story building needs to be completed first, and that won't be happening until early December. In the meantime, the building is readying to open the world's first Armani Hotel in the first 37 stories. But let's hear a little more about that vertigo-inducing observation deck, shall we?

Chicago's Sears Willis Tower only has its Skydeck on the 103rd floor, so how will you feel about ascending to the Burj's 124th via the world's highest and fastest elevators? At least you'll have an entertaining time of it...

The entire journey - starting from the welcome lobby at The Dubai Mall through a 65-metre travelator to the vertical travel in a double-deck elevator to finally watching the world uninterrupted from Level 124...a ten-part journey, 'At The Top' starts at The Dubai Mall, where visitors can buy tickets at a welcome area featuring abstract, monumental fields of LED displays, reflecting the original three-core design inspiration of Burj Dubai.

Travelling at a speed of 10 metres per second, the journey to Level 124 will take approximately 60 seconds. When the doors slide open, guests will be welcomed with floor-to-ceiling glass providing unobstructed 360 degree views. Visitors can also adventure outside onto the open-air deck to peer into the distance or down to the streets below.

Okay we don't know how much longer we can talk about this and still suppress the rumbles of wanderlust in our bellies. The Sears Tower can suck it, now that we've read about the Burj's plans. What do you think? Of course, no ticket prices for the "At The Top" experience have been released yet, but we're guessing it'll be pricier than the Leaning Tower of Pisa...and we skipped that for its 15 Euro fee.
